The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating an in-custody death that occurred at a Sutherland Avenue convenience store on Wednesday afternoon.

At around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, KPD officers responded to the BreadBox at 3818 Sutherland Avenue. A store employee reported that a man who had previously been trespassed from the store was kicked out and refusing to leave. Management requested for the subject to be arrested.

As officers went to take the subject into custody, he resisted and a struggle ensued. Following a sustained struggle, multiple backup officers arrived on scene and the man was taken into custody without further issue.

The subject sustained minor visible injuries and was placed in the back of a police cruiser to await the arrival of medical personnel. He was alert, conscious and walked to the cruiser under his own power.

While being evaluated on scene, the man’s condition suddenly began to deteriorate. On-scene medical personnel and officers began administering CPR. He was subsequently transported by AMR to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Per standard protocol and at the request of District Attorney General Charme Allen, TBI will lead the investigation into the in-custody death. The involved officers have been placed on routine administrative leave, which is standard protocol, while the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an internal administrative investigation.

Per department policy, in the event of a critical incident, the Office of Public Information will work in coordination with the Technical Services Unit and other appropriate department personnel to compile the relevant body-worn camera video for public release. KPD expects to release the video within 14 days of the incident.
